Service Highlights After 1863
By September and October 1863, he was back with his company. On March 25, 1865 the 110th Ohio was engaged in assaults of Confederate lines in Petersburg, VA. Henry Trout appears on hospital records of Depot Field Hospital in City Point, Virginia during March and April 1865 making it likely he was wounded during one of those assaults. Again, we do not know what injuries or illnesses he may have sustained. One other thing to keep in mind, however, is that his hospital stays may have resulted from illness and not from injuries. Two thirds of the approximately 620,000 soldiers who died in the Civil War died of disease and not wounds. Sanitation was notoriously poor in Civil War camps, leading to many soldiers falling ill. Trout’s regiment was present at Appomattox Courthouse when Robert E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865, but it appears Trout was in the hospital and not present.
