InVAlid or INvalid? The Henry Trout Story

Henry Trout was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There is some discrepancy about his date of birth, which becomes an issue for Henry later in life. He speaks about only knowing about his birth date because of what his grandmother told him, and knowing very little about his father. He never married, and records consistently indicate that he had no family. At some point in his youth, Henry made his way to Ohio.

As a young man, he probably was caught up in the call to war for the Union. It appears he ultimately enlisted to serve with the Union Army on August 15, 1862, and was mustered in with the 110th Ohio Infantry on October 3, 1862. He would go on to serve throughout the entire War, mustering out on June 25, 1865 in Washington, D.C.

According to CSMR records, Henry was MIA after a battle in June of 1863, and in July and August he was in the hospital at the Newton University U.S.A. General Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Injuries he suffered at this point in time may have contributed to the disabilities he suffered later in life which are evident in his pension records.
