Who was Henry Trout? Private Henry Trout scrawled his name in 1863 during the Civil War on the wall of what would come to be known as the Graffiti House at Brandy Station. What can we learn about who the person behind the graffiti was by examining the primary documents that exist about his service during the war and his struggle to claim his Civil War Pension after the War?

This exhibit consists of a collection of documents that help create Henry’s story. 19th century census records reveal little information about Henry. Therefore, it is up to the readers of the documents to flesh out who Henry Trout really was.
